Three string quartets for Benedict XVI’s birthday

concerto, 16.IV.16

(17/4/16) A birthday in music for the Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI. It was celebrated yesterday evening with a concert in the Sala Assunta of the Palazzina Leone XIII (seat of the Vatican Radio in the Vatican City), close to his residence, the Mater Ecclesiae Monastery. His brother Msgr. Georg Ratzinger, who turned 92 years old on 15th January, also attended the concert.

The Philharmonic Orchestra of Franciacorta, directed by Edmondo Mosè Savio performed three of the six string quartets Wolfang Amadeus Mozart dedicated to his friend Franz Joseph Haydn. They are among the most important works the composer from Salzburg wrote in his maturity: the String Quartet No. 14 in G major, K. 387, a part of Quartet No.15 in D minor, K. 421, and Quartet No.16 in E-flat major, K.428.
