Three years ago the “Habemus Papam” announcement

13.3.16

(13/3/16) Today is the third anniversary of the election of Pope Francis, and we send him our best wishes. In the evening of 13th March 2013, cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio, archbishop of Buenos Aires, was elected Supreme Pontiff and succeeded Benedict XVI. On the previous 28th February, Benedict had left the College of Cardinals and had told those assembled “Among you there is the future Pope to whom I promise my unconditional obedience and reverence”.

Pope Francis and the emeritus Pope Benedict XVI often met during the three years and they had private and public meetings. The first time was on 23rd March 2013 in Castel Gandolfo, just a few days after the election. It is a wonderful example of fraternity in the service and the apostolic succession.
