7^th September 2014 – “Historical assessment of the Fourth Gospel” is the title of the presentation held by Father Yves Simoens S.I on 24^th October 2013, during the International Symposium “The Gospels: History and Christology – The research by Joseph Ratzinger”, in Rome. The text of the conference was published in the periodical “La Civiltà Cattolica”, (n. 3941, 6^th September 2014). Due to its theological and spiritual nature, the Gospel of John was often considered to be unreliable from the historical point of view. However, the analysis of some important pericopes made by the author invalidates this position and demonstrates their historical authenticity. It is not possible to separate John’s faith from history, because faith does not conflict with historical accuracy. It helps us to consider the historical aspect of faith.
